At Buckland CE Primary School, we strongly believe that spending time outdoors plays an important role in children’s holistic development. During Forest School sessions, the activities we provide support the development of fine and gross motor skills, problem-solving abilities, social interaction, communication, self-esteem and self-confidence, alongside other valuable life skills. Our school values of being wise, responsible, and kind are also central to every Forest School experience.
Our Forest School provision began in February 2022, with our Level 3 Forest School Leader gaining her qualification in February 2023. Since then, we have worked towards offering weekly sessions for Nursery and Reception children (on a rota basis), as well as for Year 1 pupils.
For our older children, we aim to provide Forest School experiences beyond the school grounds whenever possible. We are extremely grateful for the continued support of our parent helpers, whose involvement is invaluable and greatly enhances our provision.
Under careful supervision during Forest School sessions, children may have the opportunity to:
cook on the fire
safely use tools (such as bow saws, potato peelers, knives, and hand drills)
observe birds
plant seeds
explore with mud and water
build shelters
take part in listening activities
participate in team-building games
relax in a hammock
climb trees
enjoy the tyre swing
observe and learn about insects and wildlife
These experiences allow children to build confidence, resilience and a connection with the natural world.
Please find in the classes sections below more details about the sessions and the different activities.
