We have had a busy afternoon investigating soils. The children looked at samples of soil from two places in the school grounds and made careful observations to see what they could find. They found earthworms, centipedes, leaves, nut shells, twigs, snails, small pieces of rock etc. We talked about what soil is made from and discovered some interesting facts, for example that it can take 500 to 1000 years to form one inch of topsoil and that in an acre of soil there can be more than 500,000 worms. We thought that was amazing.
