On Wednesday the 10th May, we went to Abingdon School for a science workshop all about Food Types and the Digestive System. We first learnt about eating a balanced diet; we then tested different foods to see if they contained sugar using Benedict's reagent which was added to food samples. The samples were then heated for 5 minutes in hot water - if it turned orange, the food contained sugar. After this, we repeated our investigation, this time testing for carbohydrates through adding Biuret reagent - if the food sample turned purple, then carbohydrates were present. Finally, we learnt about the different parts of our digestive system - the children were amazed at how long the digestive system is - 9m in an adult! It was a brilliant workshop and Sycamore class worked incredibly well both independently and in groups.
